Baby Bunnies at the Richmond Shelter!

Richmond has had a problem with rabbits loose in the park. Most of them are domestic rabbit who have been bought at pet stores and abandon to the park. The City of Richmond Council needs to act now to stop the sale of these animals in pet stores. Just today, the Richmond Animal Shelter took in four (4) baby rabbit that were bought at a pet store. Two were abandon and rescued by local residents, and two were brought in by people who had actually bought the rabbits less than a month ago!

Fur Free Vancouver Boycotts the Fairmont Hotels

The Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver, BC rents space to Snowflake Furs which sells the fur of dead animals. Fur Free Vancouver is hosting protests, petitions and ways to contact the hotel to get them to stop allowing this cruelty. Fur animals are raised and killed in the most inhumane ways possible, and people will not stand for it.

Petition to ban the sale of animals in retail outlets

Over the last year, RAPS has been collecting signatures to petition the City of Richmond to ban or restrict the sale of animals from retail outlets (such as pet stores). RAPS has found that a large number of these animals are bought as impulse buys and are often abandoned or surrendered to the Richmond Animal Shelter within a year of purchase. In the coming months, RAPS hopes to urge the City of Richmond to act on this petition and begin changing the bylaw to protect animals. Long Term Foster Homes Need for Cats

The Richmond Animal Protection Society is looking for some people to open their homes to some senior cats that required long-term foster care. My favorite dog walking places in Richmond, BC

I have two dogs at home that suggest we go for walks at least twice a day (often more). I have to keep them interested, so here's where we go.

McDonald Beach -- located by YVR airport, this is an off leash dog park on the north fork of the Fraser River. When the tide is out (and it's warm enough), dogs can run and play at will.

No. 3 Road Dog Bark -- located at the very south end of No. 3 Road, this dog park is also on the water, but the beach isn't accessible. Instead, the dogs have lots of great running space and a special drinking foundation just for dogs!

Shell Road Trail -- The off-leash dog trail is good only good for short distances off leash, but is easily accessible from the Shell Road West and Williams intersection. The trail itself intersects many streets, so keep your leash on hand!

This blog is the first step in establishing a network of pet owners, rescue workers and volunteers in the greater Vancouver area (British Columbia). Many people who support or have adopted animals from the Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS) have expressed a need to share or learn about resources for animals rescue, pet ownership, and the like which is relevant to those living in Richmond, BC and the surrounding area. Some topics that would be of interest for this resource blog include: pet sitting services, pet friendly rental housing, suggestions (not endorsements!) for veterinarians, dog training, pet day care and pet health resources.
